First Year Recovery following a Simulated Drought in Walnut
نویسندگان
چکیده
A one year drought was simulated in 1989 on mature conventionally spaced cv. Chico walnuts. A controlled deficit irrigation (~DI) regime was used to apply 16 inches of water for the season. Yield in that year was not significantly different than fully irrigated (41 inches) trees. The CDI trees were returned to full irrigation in 1990. This year, nut yield was dramatically lower due to about an 80% reduction in nut load. The one year delay in a negative impact on production was presumably due primarily to carryover effects of reduced stress year shoot growth that limited the number of fruiting positions in the following season. This study illustrates that . maintaining production during a drought year does not indicate success in overcoming limited water supplies. Success of CDI must be measured over both the drought and fOllowing seasons. Walnut production responds negatively to CDI--severe water stress cannot be tolerated.

Walnut Orchard Recovery following a Single Drought Year
To evaluate the effects of limited water supplies on production, a one year drought was simulated in 1989 on mature conventionally spaced cv. Chico walnuts. Controlled deficit irrigation (CDI), an irrigation strategy that imposes water deprivation during stages of the season when the trees are considered most tolerant of water stress, was used to apply 16 acre-inches/acre (hereafter referred to...

The black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) is an underutilized fruit in the mid-hills of Nepal. However, the physico-chemical properties of Nepalese black walnut are almost unavailable in the literature. Four walnut growing districts namely Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Jumla and East Rukum selected and the black walnut collected at commercial maturity from the local markets. The physical properties w...
متن کاملFixed allocation patterns, rather than plasticity, benefit recruitment and recovery from drought in seedlings of a desert shrub
The response of plants to drought is controlled by the interaction between physiological regulation and morphological adjustment. Although recent studies have highlighted the long-term morphological acclimatization of plants to drought, there is still debate on how plant biomass allocation patterns respond to drought. In this study, we performed a greenhouse experiment with first-year seedlings...
متن کاملEffect of Budding Method, Rootstock Age and Cut below Budding Union on Budding Success in Persian Walnut
Budding is a good method of propagation in the Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.)., However, success of budding is low due to higher root pressure as well as the presence of phenolic compounds in the xylem sap. This study was conducted to compare various budding methods and cut below budding union on two and three-year-old Persian walnut under field conditions. The experiment was conducted based...
متن کاملEffects of an experimental drought and recovery on soil emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and nitric oxide in a moist tropical forest
Changes in precipitation in the Amazon Basin resulting from regional deforestation, global warming, and El Niño events may affect emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and nitric oxide (NO) from soils. Changes in soil emissions of radiatively important gases could have feedback implications for regional and global climate. Here, we report the final results of a ...
